Straô Renesse 2025

events

The Straô is an annual tradition on Schouwen-Duiveland that brings together horse lovers, culture enthusiasts, and visitors from far and wide. This unique event, rooted in ancient pagan traditions, celebrates the connection between nature, culture, and community in a festive and colourful procession.

What can you expect during Straô in Renesse?

  • Festive Parade: Every Saturday between mid-February and late March, a different village on Schouwen-Duiveland hosts Straô. In Renesse, riders and their beautifully decorated horses gather for a festive parade through the village, accompanied by music and spectators.
  • The Ride to the Beach: Around midday, the parade moves to the beach. Riders and their horses make an impressive procession to the coast, where the highlight of the day takes place.
  • Ritual Washing in the Sea: The most magical moment of Straô is when the horses are led into the sea. This ritual washing in the salty water is performed to drive away evil spirits and heal the horses from any winter ailments.
  • Competition and Art: During Straô, the horses are lavishly decorated with natural materials, and riders often wear traditional attire. A jury judges the best combinations and awards prizes for the most beautifully decorated horse and the best-dressed rider.
  • Extra Activities and Festivities: In addition to the ride to the beach, the day ends in the village, where local treats like schroasels (spiced flat cakes) are served.

All villages celebrating Straô

Straô takes place annually in six villages on Schouwen-Duiveland: Renesse, Burgh-Haamstede, Noordwelle, Ellemeet, Scharendijke, and Serooskerke. Each village celebrates Straô on a different Saturday, allowing you to enjoy this beautiful tradition over multiple weekends in various charming villages.

A Unique Tradition on Schouwen-Duiveland
