Lookout Tower Slapershil - Observation point

In the heart of the Westerschouwen Forestry near Burgh-Haamstede, you'll find the Slapershil lookout tower. This robust concrete structure sits atop De Blinkert, the island’s highest natural dune, offering breathtaking panoramic views.

What to expect at Slapershil?

• 360-degree panoramic view: From the top of this 36-metre-high tower, you can see:
  • Meeuwenduinen: Expansive dunes with valleys and rare flora just nearby.
  • Westerschouwen Forestry: Zeeland's largest forest, planted in the 1920s, beautifully visible from above.
  • Verklikkerduin: Known for its high peaks and drifting sands.
  • North Sea: On a clear day, the sea sparkles on the horizon.
  • Village and lighthouse: In the distance, you can spot Burgh-Haamstede and, in good weather, even the iconic Nieuw-Haamstede lighthouse.
• Walk through silence and nature: The 15-minute walk from ‘Het Groene Duin’ car park is already an experience. You pass peaceful dune valleys, birds and marram grass.

A tower with history

• Rich in nature: “Slapershil” is a traditional dune name linked to the rolling landscape around it.
• A historic story: Built in 1946 by the water company after the Zierikzee tower was destroyed in WWII. Initially a water pressure pipe, but its views soon attracted visitors.
• Fire watch duty: From the 1960s to 1984, it served as a fire lookout, ideal for monitoring the increasingly wooded Westerschouwen area.
• Restoration and heritage: After decades of decay, the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland bought the tower symbolically for one guilder. Thanks to major restorations in 2000, it is now safely open to the public.

Practical information

• Location: Park at ‘Het Groene Duin’ car park on Adriaan v/d Weijdeweg, accessible via Bosweg, Burgh-Haamstede. From there, it's a 15-minute walk along a concrete path.
• Free access: The tower is free to visit and open all day – ideal for early birds or sunset seekers.

Make a day of it and combine your visit with a hike or bike ride through the Kop van Schouwen.
